Solar panel installation underlines Alwoodley’s ongoing commitment to sustainability

GCMA member Richard Weeks says Alwoodley’s move to install solar panels is a sign of the club’s commitment to sustainability.

Alwoodley Golf Club has doubled down on its sustainability efforts by installing solar panels on site.

Having achieved GEO Certification, the club has now added the panels on the roof of the greenkeeping facility and to the side of the practice ground, with the latter feeding back into the nearby clubhouse.

Plans are in place to transition into a reliance on more sustainable equipment, from electric hand tools through to utility vehicles, with a long-term aim to deploy a fleet of electric grass-cutting equipment.

Given the distance between the greenkeeping facility and the clubhouse, it was unfeasible to transfer the energy between the two, so phase two of the installation has provided the solution.

Making use of unused space along the side of the practice ground has enabled the installation of 80 additional panels, which will generate energy for the clubhouse.

Richard Weeks, Alwoodley’s Managing Secretary, said: “The installation of solar panels is the latest example of Alwoodley’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

“It is a credit to the work of all the staff that we continue to strive for ways to demonstrate excellence in sustainable golf.”

The solar installation project is part of a wider commitment to sustainability at the Leeds-based facility, which has already seen the planting of almost 2,000 trees as well as ongoing rainwater harvesting.
