Since taking on the role of GCMA National Captain, I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities it has given me to meet Golf Club Managers from across the country, hear their experiences and gain a greater insight into the work being carried out across the Association.
One of the real highlights of my captaincy so far has been attending the various GCMA business meetings and events. These occasions provide a great opportunity to meet fellow professionals, build new relationships and, perhaps most importantly, share ideas and experiences. Every club and every region has its own challenges and opportunities, and there is always something to learn from talking to other managers about the way they approach their roles.
I have particularly enjoyed the strong sense of community that exists within the Association. Golf club management can sometimes be a demanding and challenging profession, so having the opportunity to connect with colleagues who understand those pressures is incredibly valuable. The conversations and relationships that develop at GCMA events extend well beyond the meetings themselves, creating a strong professional network and a real sense of support across the industry.
The International Matches have also been a particular highlight of my time as National Captain. They provide a different side to the role and a wonderful opportunity to experience the competitive nature of golf while also enjoying the camaraderie and spirit that surrounds the game. It has been fantastic to see colleagues come together in such a positive environment, with competition on the course complemented by friendship and good humour off it.
I also want to recognise the tremendous work of the GCMA Regional Managers. I cannot thank them enough for the welcome they have given me and for the commitment they show in creating business meetings that offer a valuable combination of education, networking and support.
The regional structure is such an important part of the GCMA, and visiting different regions gives me the chance to see first-hand the variety of initiatives, challenges and experiences within our membership. It is also a great reminder of just how broad and diverse the golf club management community is.
Looking ahead, I am particularly excited about the opportunity to visit all of the GCMA regions over the coming autumn and spring business meetings. I am looking forward to meeting even more managers, listening to their experiences and continuing to learn from the people who make up our Association.
These visits will also give me the opportunity to hear directly from members about what matters to them and what they would like to see from the GCMA in the future. For me, being National Captain is very much about representing and connecting with our membership, and I see these regional visits as an important part of that.
Overall, my captaincy so far has been an enjoyable and incredibly rewarding experience, both professionally and personally. I have met some fantastic people, strengthened existing relationships and made many new ones along the way.
There is still plenty to look forward to, and I am excited about continuing the journey, visiting the regions and spending more time with Golf Club Managers across the country over the coming months.
Most importantly, I hope to continue to enjoy the same spirit of friendship, learning and collaboration that has made the captaincy so enjoyable so far.
