About Jerry Kilby…
Jerry is a Golf Club Manager, golf industry educator and consultant with over 30 years of experience in the European golf and club industry in senior management roles.
“This is an area that, as I travel the country and talk to many of you and meet many Committee members and Boards and Directors of clubs, they tend to not be aware of the fact that there are elements of the club’s business that they are responsible for,” said Jerry.
“A lot of Committee members or volunteers believe it’s your job and say, ‘I don’t have anything to do with health and safety or fire safety or whatever — that’s what we employed the manager for’.
“Board members should never assume that it’s not their job, so please say to your members and your volunteers: ask; if you’re not sure, please ask — what are my responsibilities with regard to accidents or to kitchen safety or food safety? Whatever it happens to be, you would prefer them to ask than to assume it’s someone else’s responsibility.”
The discussion also covered the necessity of having a clear, communicated safeguarding policy, proper handling of membership disciplinary matters, and the importance of record-keeping and training, with Jerry underscoring the need for collective responsibility and awareness among all relevant parties to prevent legal and reputational risks.
