At the GCMA’s 2023 Conference in November, the theme of team culture takes centre stage. On the latest episode of the Golf Club Talk UK Podcast, GCMA chief executive Tom Brooke explained its importance…

Golf clubs will only thrive on the opportunities brought by a surge in participation if they get their culture right.

In the latest episode of GCMA Insights on the Golf Club Talk UK podcast, association chief executive Tom Brooke said the sport had a chance to “really thrive”, benefit from the boost in numbers provided by the Covid pandemic, and make a “long-term difference to the game”.

Previewing the GCMA 2023 Conference in November, which focuses on Team Culture, Brooke told podcast host Leighton Walker that there had been big accelerations in societal change in recent years and that golf clubs were slowly starting to modernise too.

But he argued that to make a positive impact, there could only be success if “we get cultures at golf clubs right and we get team cultures right”.

He explained: “If we look again at the hugely fortuitous position that golf clubs found themselves in a couple of years ago, against all the adversity, we’re now in a place where we’ve got an opportunity to really thrive and make this count for the long term – and not just say, ‘hey, do you remember the couple of years where we had waiting lists?’

“We’ve actually got to make a long-term difference to the game and that will only change and develop for the long-term if we get cultures at golf clubs right and we get team cultures right.

“That starts with good governance and having a strategic plan in place, identifying where you want to be as a club, what you want to get to, what’s your purpose, vision, and values?

“And then, what are the behaviours that need to be instilled in the club – by staff, the board of directors, by the committees?

“That leadership then flows through the whole club, and that’s where the club can begin to thrive. That’s what really led us to this theme of Team Culture for Conference, which I really excited about.

“We’ve got a great range of speakers, both in terms of keynotes and breakouts that will take us through a journey of the various aspects that will contribute towards great team culture at a golf club.”
