CMT 3: Honing in on the topics that matter most

The next set of dates for the Clubhouse Management Training (CMT) Programme have been confirmed.

Some younger managers may find it hard to believe that high-quality industry education was not always readily available to Golf Club Managers.

Over the last 20 years, Kevin Fish is recognised industry-wide as having done more than most to change that, both as a volunteer and in running his training, recruitment and consultancy business Contemporary Club Leadership Ltd (CCL).

“There’s never been a better time to be coming in to our industry,” he said. “If it’s your intention to make this a career, you now have qualification frameworks and expertise readily available to you to learn from, and lean on. Trust me, that wasn’t always the case.”

Kevin has taken his passion for education and developing people into two other parts of our industry: greenkeeping and hospitality.

He is honoured to sit on the board of BIGGA, the first non-greenkeeper to be invited to do so, and as he explained, he also felt a huge sympathy for the hospitality part of the business, who for a long time somehow got left behind when it came to industry training and support.

“It dawned on me that we were training General Managers to demand more from their Clubhouse Managers, but had failed to make sure that those clubhouse staff had been properly trained to deliver on those ever-increasing expectations,” he said.

“I worked really hard with Steve Brown to create a programme that would cover the five Ps of Clubhouse Management, and eight years on we have seen over 500 Clubhouse Managers, bar supervisors, chefs and aspiring Clubhouse Managers attend the series of two-day programmes.

“The Clubhouse Management Training (CMT) Programme consistently generates delegate feedback scores of above 97% and this year will see the launch of the CMT 3 course, focused entirely on the hot topics consistently chosen by delegates who have attended the first two courses.

“The dates of the courses are intentionally kept to the darker winter months to accommodate the work pressures on our clubhouse staff, and often act as a huge energiser for what we all know is a very demanding role.”

The dates of the next CMT courses are shown below, along with some beautiful testimonies from just a few of the amazing hospitality staff who are working in golf.

Kevin concluded: “There is no better feeling than having a General Manager call me to tell me what an impact the training has had on his clubhouse staff, who cant wait to share their new knowledge with them, and their teams.”
