The Golf Course Management for Golf Club Managers course takes place at Moortown Golf Club later this month.
They are two roles fundamental to the success of any golf club, which makes a fruitful working relationship between Club Manager and Course Manager vital.
The Golf Course Management for Golf Club Managers certificate promises to help bring those two roles closer together by creating an understanding among Club Managers of what their Course Manager counterparts have to deal with.
Part of the Advanced Management Programme’s Golf Operations and Hospitality Award, this three-day course will be delivered across April 29th to May 1st at Moortown Golf Club in Leeds.
Phil Helmn, Programme Leader – Agronomy, Leadership, and Management at our training partners the Bernhard Academy, and Sami Strutt, the organisation’s Education Director, appeared on the Golf Club Talk UK podcast to discuss the forthcoming course.
“The course is not designed to turn General Managers into Course Managers,” said Phil. “The premise of the whole thing is learning through the educational aspect of it so the General Manager is able to support the Course Manager and help them deliver the agronomic benefits of the operation.
“We will discuss the agronomic principles of a greenkeeper’s role, about how we benchmark the performance of sports turf surfaces and what that looks like. We’ll also delve a little bit deeper into the sustainable greenkeeping cultural practices that the Course Manager has to develop to create a great surface.
“We will talk a lot about flora and fauna, sustainable water management, and we’ll get into relationship building and how we can support on another.”
The course also includes a section on Asset Management and Capital Planning, which Phil knows is a key part in any golf club operation.
“We know that Club Managers obviously work with finances day in, day out,” he said. “They have their own set of budgets and we touch on that, but we look at what the Course Manager has to work with – what are the consumables that they have to budget for, and what are the costs of those, and we’ll go into some of the jargon.
“We’ll explain about seasonal budgeting, flat-line budgeting, and talk about all of those different concepts of financial concepts.
“We’re giving the Club Manager the insights into the world of course management and busting some myths, and explaining it in a little bit more detail.”
Sami summed up the value of the course, adding: “It’s about everybody understanding the part each person plays in making that golf course business successful. Everybody wants it to be a successful business, because everybody’s livelihoods rely on that business.
“What we’re trying to get across is that for a Club Manager, the Course Manager is actually one of your closest allies. It’s about making sure that relationship is really tight, because between those two roles, you’re going to be able to really deliver the message and the playing surfaces the golfers want.”
