The Club:

Weston-super-Mare Golf Club is a long-established member’s golf club which is regarded by many as one of Somerset’s premier links courses. Founded in 1892 it was originally designed by the famous architect of the time Mr Tom Dunne and subsequently modernized in 1922 by Dr Alister MacKenzie, co-designer of Augusta National. The course occupies an enviable position at the mouth of the Severn Estuary, with some holes offering spectacular views across the estuary towards Wales.

The Role:

The Club is seeking to recruit an experienced, dynamic and enthusiastic General Manager to work at the club alongside the Club’s Management Committee. This pivotal role within The Club will be responsible for providing the highest standards of service to the Club membership, visitors and guests. The successful candidate will be key in delivering The Club’s future operational, financial and strategic objectives and will be expected to motivate, lead and inspire staff.

Reporting to the Management Committee and working to goals set out in a business plan, the General Manager will be responsible for the day to day running of The Club. Additionally, they will be responsible for liaising with the Management Committee, sub-committees and other volunteer postholders, who specialise in specific disciplines, such as finance and marketing.

The General Manager will have the following posts: Head Greenkeeper, Club Professional, Administrative Staff, Clubhouse personal, including a Cheff and bar stewards reporting to them directly

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have great all-round management skills and be capable in both operational and project management. In this diverse role they will be able to manage   hospitality through to infrastructure projects on the course They will have a demonstrable track record of management and leadership, and preferably a good understanding of the expectations and traditions of a members’ club. 

They will have commercial judgment with experience of developing revenue streams while managing costs supported up by a sound understanding of budgeting and finance.

They will act as a first point of contact for members, visitors and permanent members of staff, ensuring that everyone who works for or visits the Club has the most positive experience possible and that the Club’s reputation is enhanced at every opportunity.

Essential Criteria

  • Leading and motivating multi-disciplined teams
  • Experience of setting staff objectives and conducting annual appraisals.
  • Good communicator – both verbal and written.
  • Sound financial and commercial acumen.
  • Experience of business development and growing revenue streams
  • Good IT skills – MS Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of licensing law, employment law, health and safety legislation and risk management

Desirable criteria

  • An appreciation of golf and the expectations/traditions of a members club.
  • An appreciation and understanding of Social Media
  • A willingness to undertake skills and industry training so as to maintain their skills at the highest level – supported by the Club
  • A willingness to work flexible hours to meet the demands of the position.
  • Member of the GCMA.
  • Sound knowledge of the Rules of Golf and the World Handicap System.
  • Some knowledge of accounting and the use of Xero accounting software.
  • Negotiation – demonstrate the skills of communication, persuasion, planning, strategizing and co-operating so as to obtain the required outcome.
  • Flexibility – the ability to be able to quickly adapt to new circumstances as they arise

The club are seeking to achieve the business plan goals and a competitive salary will reflect success
