London & Home Counties Region hosts ‘Future Leaders’ education day

It proved to be a hugely beneficial day of education and peer-to-peer learning at The Drift.

The London & Home Counties Region ran their latest ‘Future Leaders’ education day at The Drift on February 20th.

The day began with Scott Patience, Gary Stangoe, Maureen Brooker, Gareth Morgan, Murray Cook and Tom Parish sharing some background regarding their own careers and how they reached where they are today within the industry, as well as some useful hints and tips that they learned along the way.

Gary then delivered a fascinating insight into the challenges he faced as a General Manager when leading the outstanding project of Reading Golf Club moving to merge with Caversham Golf Club and everything that was required to deliver this project to the standard that has been achieved.

After lunch, the host General Manager, Tom, shared the story of how The Drift developed their practice facilities from a small covered playing area with some mats to the highly impressive driving range, professional shop, swing studio and short game facility that it is today, and what that has done to their ability to attract new golfers to the game.  Attendees were then treated to a tour of the fabulous facilities.

GCMA Professional Development Manager Gareth then ran a session where he asked those in attendance to consider what their own career aspirations are and what they need to do to achieve them, and once that goal has been achieved the importance of setting new goals and planning how they can achieve those.

Gareth also incorporated the importance of education and networking in any Golf Club Manager’s career and outlined the variety of available routes through the GCMA.

The day concluded with all of the experienced General Managers answering questions from those in attendance across an array of topics, from how best to achieve their career goals to some more golf operations-based questions.

It proved an uplifting day of education for the next generation of Golf Club Managers. Congratulations to the London & Home Counties Regional Manager, Maureen, and her dedicated Regional Committee for organising such a hugely beneficial day.
