Molly Pavey: We can all learn from each other

Molly Pavey was named Rising Star at the Women in Golf Awards and she remains hungry to continue her professional development journey.

Award-winning General Manager Molly Pavey is a strong believer in peer-to-peer learning.

Molly claimed the Rising Star honour at the Women in Golf Awards, where the GCMA were proud sponsors of the Women’s Leadership category.

Having played the game to a high standard, Molly knew she wanted to pursue a career in golf and got her first job at Dudsbury, later moving to Meyrick Park as Golf Operations Manager, before joining Bramshaw three years ago and working her way up to General Manager.

She now serves in that role across a trio of venues under the ownership of Stellar Asset Management, namely Bramshaw, Newark Golf Club and Paultons Golf Centre.

Having made such rapid progress in the early stages of her career, Molly cited the key benefits of learning from those around you, as well as the value of formal education programmes.

“I think you can look at education in two ways,” she said. “Some of it is what courses that you go on, but also I think education is what you see and what you can learn from other people.

“We have quite an open door in terms of management books and things like that, so all of the team are aware of where we’re at, what we need to be doing, and where the business is.

“Obviously, having three golf clubs you can also do internal comparisons as well, so you can learn from each other. For example, if one has done amazing in food and beverage this month, you can look at how they achieved it.

“That means there’s an education exchange that we can do between sites as well, which is quite nice.”

With a remit encompassing three venues, Molly is relishing the opportunities that come with such a broad set of responsibilities and is glad to still benefit from a “personal” touch to her working environment.

“I learned a lot about what multi-site management could look like while in my previous role at Meyrick Park, with the Club Company,” she said. “That was very corporate environment, which is not something that I loved or thrived on.

“In moving to where I am you’ve still got that support network with a company above you, and you’ve got a finance team that you can run to if you’ve got a question, but it’s a little bit more internal and a bit more personal, which has definitely helped me progress to where I am now.”

On the night Molly was honoured, England Golf Performance Manager Becca Hembrough was the winner of the GCMA-sponsored Women’s Leadership award. Association CEO Tom Brooke was there to present the award, underlining the GCMA’s commitment to such initiatives and the professional development of the industry workforce.
