Newly Accredited Manager Spotlight: Eddie Kear

As part of a series of Q&As with the latest cohort of newly Accredited Managers, we put Shirehampton Park’s Club Secretary Eddie Kear in the spotlight.

Can you provide an outline of your career to date?

I began my career in golf at Shirehampton Park Golf Club, where I played as a junior, joining the pro shop team in a part-time role while still in school. After completing my A-Levels, I transitioned to a full-time role in the pro shop for two years. I then moved to the greenkeeping department for six months. Seeking a change, I enjoyed some time in the sales industry before an opportunity arose to work under the Managing Secretary at Shirehampton Park. I returned to the club in an office role, eventually becoming the Deputy Club Secretary. In December 2023, I was promoted to Club Secretary.

Why did you decide to go through the Accreditation process?

During a GCMA Principles of Golf Club Management training week, I learned about the Accreditation process and was immediately eager to work towards my first Accreditation. I learnt that the Accreditation would provide a structured way to recognise and document my skills and achievements. As an aspiring Golf Club Manager, I saw it as an excellent opportunity to have my capabilities verified by a respected industry body, enhancing my CV and career prospects.

How would you describe the process?

The process was straightforward and efficient. After a call with Tom Brooke from the GCMA, we identified the appropriate Accreditation level for me. I was guided through the Accreditation portal, learning about the required CPD points and the submission process for my skills, knowledge, experience, and achievements. I appreciated the clear instructions on submission timelines and was able to prepare and submit my portfolio smoothly.

What do you hope Accredited status will mean for your career?

Alongside recognising my skills, knowledge and experience in my current role, I hope that achieving Accredited status will serve as a strong endorsement to potential future employers and reflect my commitment to continuous learning and professional development within the industry.

What would your advice be to anyone considering applying?

My advice to anyone applying would be to get involved as soon as you can. I very much enjoyed the process, the GCMA were supportive throughout and being awarded Aspiring Manager status gave me a great sense of achievement.
