Newly Accredited Manager Spotlight: George Reid

As part of a series of Q&As with the latest cohort of newly Accredited Managers, we put Wyke Green Golf Club’s Membership & Sales Manager George Reid in the spotlight.

Can you provide a brief outline of your career to date?

I graduated from Bournemouth University with a degree in sports management back in 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic was rife, and job opportunities were limited. I did however come across a job for my current position and decided to apply. I managed to succeed in getting the role and haven’t looked back since. I have learnt so much through day-to-day work experiences, my industry peers, and additional professional education that I’ve done. Even with my degree subject, a career in golf club management wasn’t something I had considered. However, I wouldn’t change it; I love the industry and our members here at Wyke Green. There is definitely something nice about working in an environment where people come to enjoy themselves. It leads to a nice atmosphere.

Why did you decide to go through the Accreditation process?

I’m looking to progress in the industry and work up to my first GM role. Going through the Accreditation was aimed at improving my CV in readiness for the next stages of my career.

How would you describe the process?

Painless. Having the ability to complete the information in your own time over a period of weeks was great. The portal used to complete the Accreditation worked well, with no issues throughout any of the process.

What do you hope Accredited status will mean for your career?

I hope it will help provide some recognition towards the experience I’ve gained over the past 3.5 years when either applying for a future role elsewhere or internally here at my current club.

The Accreditation system has levels that provide scope for further growth, does that appeal to you?

Absolutely. I will be going through the process again when the accreditation window opens again down the line.

What would your advice be to anyone considering applying?

Just go for it, what have you got to lose out of it? It can only help you in my opinion!
