Newly Accredited Manager Spotlight: Martin Yeates

As part of a series of Q&As with the latest cohort of newly Accredited Managers, we put Dyke Golf Club’s General Manager Martin Yeates in the spotlight.

Can you provide an outline of your career to date?

After completing a diploma in Golf and Leisure Management at De Montfort University (which included a sandwich year working at a golf club in Northeast Georgia, USA), my first steps into Golf Club Management were at the Dyke when I was appointed as Assistant Secretary in May 2011. In September 2013 I was promoted to Secretary of the club and then made General Manager in June 2024.

Why did you decide to go through the Accreditation process?

The GCMA were promoting the Accreditation scheme at the National Conference and at a few Regional Meetings. I felt it would be a good idea to get a go for Accreditation so I can be recognised for my experience in the industry.

How would you describe the process?

The process was thorough. Although I could tick many of the boxes, there were a few that required a bit of attention. Now that these areas have been looked at, our club is in a good position going forward.

What do you hope Accredited status will mean for your career?

The Accreditation for me reinforces my confidence both personally and professionally. My Board appreciate personal development and feel this is a great way to show our members the standard of management provided at the club. My assistant is also Accredited as an Aspiring Manager, so hopefully he will be looking to take the next step soon.

What would your advice be to anyone considering applying?

Go for it. While undertaking the process, it will highlight areas of your management that are working well and areas that need a bit of work. You’ll come out of the process a better manager and it can only help you in your current role and any future opportunities that may arise.

The Advanced Management Programme is launching in September — does that provide a next aspirational goal for you?

Potentially, yes. I’ll certainly have a look at the programme once it’s launched.
