Professional development opportunities that really make a difference

The GCMA’s education offering provides ambitious Golf Club Managers with the tools they need to be successful.

The continuing professional development of our members is a key motivating force for us as an Association, which makes your feedback on our education initiatives vital.

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing industry-leading opportunities in this space, we listen carefully to what you tell us.

Alongside the recently published results of our survey, we also collect feedback from each of our courses across the Advanced Management Programme (AMP) and Principles of Golf Club Management, as well as the Accreditation process.

The AMP has received an overwhelmingly positive response, with satisfaction scores between 95-98%, while our long-running Principles course is recognised across the industry.

About GCMA Principles of Golf Club Management course

The one-week Principles of Golf Club Management course will provide you with the knowledge and resources to understand the numerous areas of control that a Golf Club Manager requires.

It aims to inform you of crucial legislative processes, employment and Health & Safety principles, along with the many varied roles and responsibilities that the modern Golf Club Manager needs to have at their fingertips.

Run by the GCMA, this course has been running in excess of 30 years and is a recognised standard within the golf industry and by golf clubs and recruiters as essential education for new managers, heads of department and assistants seeking career progression or those from outside of the industry seeking a change in career path.

Robin Hood Golf Club General Manager Claire Docker is an Accredited Manager and Principles graduate who has also engaged with AMP, and she has been impressed by the level of education initiatives on offer.

Reflecting on her experience with the Principles course, she said: “I was new to the golf industry and I wanted to enhance my knowledge and skills in golf club management.

“The GCMA provided the perfect foundation. It offered a structured and comprehensive approach to understanding the key aspects of the industry, helping me develop both professionally and personally.

“I would highly recommend it — this course changed the course of my career and changed my life. The course provides invaluable insights, practical tools, and a strong foundation in golf club management.

“It’s an excellent investment in your career and will give you the confidence and knowledge to excel in the industry. I’ve never looked back.”

Claire praised the support available within the GCMA, ensuring members are looked after on their respective journeys to pursue professional development opportunities.

“Professional development is a top priority for me and I have found that the key people at the GCMA are extremely helpful and supportive,” she said.

“The training and networking opportunities, making it a fantastic organisation for career progression.

After completing the AMP Health and Safety certificate, Claire quickly applied what she had learned by implementing team-wide engagement strategies.

“It was really good to do the course, brush up on my own knowledge, learn new things, and come back and be enthused about it,” she said.

“I only had a basic knowledge of health and safety coming into it and I wanted to make sure we’re doing everything right and everything we should be doing. This course helped me do just that.”

Roger Hyder, General Manager at Canterbury Golf Club, praised the AMP Marketing Strategy course, describing it as a “godsend” that opened his eyes to new approaches.

“I’ve been on countless training courses over 35 years, but I got such a lot from the two days on this one. I can’t speak highly enough of [Course Leaders] David and Nicole Wheatley,” he said.

“I specifically went for the Marketing Strategy certificate because I’ve got some real issues in a couple of departments where my revenues have actually dipped. I said, ‘Look, if I can learn just 10% something new, it’d be terrific’, and my expectations were by far exceeded.”

Both Claire and Roger expressed an interest in attending further courses and encouraged fellow GCMA members to do the same.
