Tandridge GM’s pride at England Golf Awards nomination

General Manager Luke Edgcumbe expressed his pride at Tandridge making the shortlist for an honour at the England Golf Awards.

Tandridge Golf Club’s nomination in the Tournament Venue of the Year category at the England Golf Awards “endorses the collective achievement” after the Surrey venue excelled in hosting the English Girls’ U16/U14 Stroke Play Championship.

That is the view of General Manager Luke Edgcumbe, who expressed his pride at seeing Tandridge’s name on the shortlist for the prestigious honour.

It was four years ago when Tandridge was first approached to stage the event in 2024, the same year in which the club would mark its centenary.

The championship provided a fitting culmination to the club’s Centenary Festival Fortnight, with Luke lauding the efforts of his team and a willing army of volunteers, including “considerable input and energy from the Lady Centenary Captain, the Board and the Captains’ Committee”.

“Every staff member ‘touched’ the event and played their part, while a band of incredibly enthusiastic Tandridge members made up a team of 50+ volunteers supporting the England Golf team in delivering an exceptional tournament and showing Tandridge off at its absolute best,” he said.

“To then be advised that Tandridge had been included within the Tournament Venue of the Year nominations at this years’ England Golf Awards was a delight and a genuine surprise.

“Everyone at Tandridge was immensely proud of what we achieved and delivered over the four days of the championship; that said, never once did we anticipate external recognition for our endeavours. Simply to be nominated endorses the collective achievement.”

England Golf praised Tandridge’s greenkeeping team for going “the extra mile to showcase the course in its best condition for the championship, despite very dry and testing conditions”.

Their diligent work ensured green speeds remained consistent and the overall playing conditions were befitting of the occasion.

In its notes detailing the reasons for Tandridge’s nomination, England Golf added: “The club provided excellent food and service to the 144 junior competitors, their parents, guardians and coaches, and the on-site England Golf officials.

“The menu was reduced in size and priced at an affordable point to ensure everyone was able to experience the high-quality catering for which the club is known.

“Eighty volunteers helped on-site 12 hours a day, rescheduling dozens of volunteers late into the night, due to format changes, plus marshals assisted on the car park entrance, welcoming and directing players and visitors while also acting as security to provide active safeguarding for juniors.”

The England Golf Awards take place on April 2nd in Manchester.
